Catcher is in the Ready PositionCatching Drills

FlyBalls are great for working with catchers too! Put the Fun back in Fundamental!

A key to building sound fundamentals for catchers is an emphasis on blocking the ball with the body instead of reaching for it with the glove. Many young catchers learn bad habits like reaching out to catch balls in the dirt instead of blocking them because they are afraid of the ball. Catchers have all the gear they need to protect themselves, but for young players that may not be enough to take away their fear. They're still worried about getting hit with the hardball. You can take that fear away with FlyBall.

Simulate real speed wild pitches with FlyballUse FlyBall with your catchers during special focused practice sessions. Take a bucket of FlyBalls and kneel halfway between the pitching mound and the plate.

Have your catcher get into a ready position. Hang the loop on your thumb, pull back on the ball and release. You will be able to vary the speed of the ball by how far back you pull. Start out slow and work on the motions.

Emphasize with your catchers that they want to use their body, and the padding of the catching gear, to block the ball and keep it in front of them. Start in slow motion and work up to game speeds.

Safety Tip: Catching gear is designed to help protect players when they face the ball straight-on. Players who are afraid of the ball and turn their head or body to the side actually expose unprotected parts of the body to being hit. Help them learn the right fundamentals with FlyBall and ensure that they block the ball straight-on and learn to use their equipment to protect themselves.

Veteran's Tip: Pop Ups -- A coaches dream. Keep a FlyBall in your back pocket during infield. As the players roll in to the dugout, pull out your FlyBall and give the catcher a Major League pop up on the plate all day, every day. Win the age-old battle of Coaches' wills and skills!

Rainy Day Tip: Take your catchers to the Gym and do the same drills. You don't need a sunny day and an entire field to practice the fundamentals. All you need is about 25 feet to work with, a hard surface, and a bucket of FlyBalls.
